STATEMENT ON THE WARD 2 CITY COUNCIL EXPENSE AUDIT FOLLOW UP

October 13, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calgary, AB - Kim Tyers, Ward 2 City Council Candidate released the following statement regarding the City Council Expense Audit Follow Up.

“Today, the City of Calgary Priorities and Finance Committee discussed Ward 2 City Councillor Joe Magliocca’s ineligible airfare upgrades and hosting expenses related to Federation of Canadian Municipalities event attendance.

The report is found here:

https://pub-calgary.escribemeetings.com/FileStream.ashx?DocumentId=142298

“The focus of the report was on whether or not the Councillor violated the flight travel policy that states “Economy fair is normal, unless available.” Committee pulled the average airfares of other FCM event attendees and compared them with Councillor Magliocca’s expenses. They found a variance of $3294.25 and council voted unanimously to have the councillor from Ward 2 pay back these additional ineligible airfare expenses.

“City Council Policy also states that in claiming hosting expenses, the Councillor is required to provide the names of the hosting attendees. On 11 separate occasions, the attendee names provided were not in attendance. There are additional attendees that have yet to respond to the auditor’s request regarding their attendance. City Council voted to follow up with additional attendees to find out whether or not they were in attendance at these events. This could result in more ineligible expenses unearthed.

“We have had another meeting on this issue, and we still have silence from the Ward 2 Councillor. Also, this Councillor has yet to comply with the sanctions placed upon him by City Council. The Committee confirmed that there has been no reply or action since submitting their sanction requests to this Councillor. To review, the sanctions were to write a public letter of apology, attend City Councillor expense training, and be banned from air travel for City Council purposes.

“The more we learn about this Councillor’s lack of respect for his position as a steward of the public purse, the more it becomes apparent that he needs to resign from his position as City Councillor. City Council has had to spend numerous hours and resources on this issue. It is the taxpayer that is on the hook for this during a very vulnerable time.

“I will continue to stand up for Ward 2 and its residents. I will continue to ask for the Ward 2 City Councillor to do the right thing and resign. If elected, I will bring effective, accessible and accountable representation on behalf of the residents of Ward 2.”

WARD 2 DESERVES BETTER

October 5, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calgary, AB - Kim Tyers, Municipal City Council Candidate for Ward 2 issued the following statement regarding the lack of representation in Ward 2.

“We are facing unprecedented times. This pandemic has had a sweeping impact on Calgary, causing us to have the highest unemployment rate of any major city in Canada. Many families within our communities have been deeply impacted, facing unexpected job loss or a significant reduction in income. Even prior to the pandemic, Calgarians were struggling as our province was strapped with an economic crisis.

“It is during these times that constituents look to their locally elected leaders for guidance and reassurance that they have placed their trust in the right people.

“However, Ward 2 constituents would be hard pressed to find any reassurance at this time. Our current Councillor is entangled in a controversy about how and with whom he spent the hard earned money of taxpayers rather than creating meaningful policy to assist us in our time of need. A City Council forensic audit report on Councillor Joe Magliocca’s expenses found an alarming amount of alleged misuse of taxpayers dollars. Now, you, the hardworking taxpayer is expected to to foot the bill of the $64,0000 audit investigation. City Council has asked him to make a public apology, undergo finance training, and are not allowing him to travel for business purposes. But this does not go far enough. His actions are inexcusable. Ward 2, we deserve better. Ward 2 constituents are lacking the municipal representation to which they deserve and need now. Our Councillor is staying silent. He has had plenty of time to address the public about these allegations, yet he chooses to stay silent and as a consequence our voice for Ward 2 remains silent. This Councillor, entangled in a tax dollars spending controversy is prevented from representing us to the fullest extent of his abilities.

“Today, I am calling for Councillor Joe Magliocca of Ward 2 to resign. He is no longer fit for office. His self-interest and silence on the controversy are not acceptable. He has not resigned, he has not apologized publicly to his constituents, and he has not done right by Calgarians. If he continues this charade until the next election, I look forward to running against him.

“I will regain trust with the taxpayers. I will serve my community with transparency and be accountable to all. I will stand up for the residents of my Ward, Ward 2, and finally give us the representation that we deserve. I have always understood the importance of strong fiscal responsibility, and I will bring these values to the City Council table.  I will be a better steward of the public purse. I have experience advocating for constituents at multiple levels of government and intend to bring that experience to the municipal level. I will bring a more diverse, youthful and fresh representation on City Council. I look forward to rolling out my platform, and discussing my ideas with constituents and stakeholders. But for now, Ward 2, I have your back and I am fighting for the wrongs to be righted. With your support, I will be the new, better, stronger and accountable voice of Ward 2.”

KIM TYERS ANNOUNCES RUN FOR CALGARY CITY COUNCIL SEAT IN WARD 2

September 17, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calgary, AB - Local public servant and resident Kim Tyers is running for City Council in Ward 2. She issued the following statement regarding her candidacy:

“We are living in unprecedented times. This pandemic has affected everyone in the city in one way or another, whether it's the small-business owner who had to shut down their operations or the single parent who had to handle their children’s education simultaneously while working remotely from home. City Council, especially during a pandemic, should be making smart financial decisions on behalf of all Calgarians to weather this storm. Residents of Calgary need their councillors to responsibly prioritize policy and spending in the context of a balanced budget to reduce their tax burden.

“I am running for City Council in Ward 2 to bring fiscal responsibility to City Council. I am running to restore respect and accountability back to the taxpayers dollars. I am running to bring a young, diverse and experienced perspective to policy-making at the municipal level.

“I am a proud descendant of Chinese immigrants, born and raised in Calgary. Ward 2 is where my husband and I have chosen to raise our family for the last decade. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Government from the University of Calgary. I have years of experience working in the private sector and was a small business owner of a business focused on dance education and keeping Calgarians healthy and fit. Most recently, I have served the public through working as a Manager of Constituency Affairs by supporting a Federal Member of Parliament where I was able to advocate for constituents and help them navigate federal government resources and programs. I spend my time volunteering in my community, supporting the performing arts and helping great women get elected to political office. My close connection to the community, experience in policy making and working with multiple levels of government makes me a strong candidate for Ward 2.

“I will make common sense decisions on behalf of Ward 2 residents in the context of a balanced budget. I will be a representative who takes the job of City Councillor seriously, not just through my words but my actions as well. I will use my government and community experience to make sure our services and policies reflect what is best for Calgarians. As my campaign begins, I am excited to talk to Ward 2 residents and develop my policy platform.”
